Budget

Decide on and Set a budget straight from the beginning. Be honest and open with your cake decorator regarding your budget. It will make the process much easier and smoother for both parties.  It’s really important that you trust your cake designer enough that you tell them your real budget.

1.

Plan well in advance

Unless you already have a firm idea of the kind of cake you'd like, there will need to be time to look around at options, as well as booking the cake creator, allocating the funds, and finding any special decorative elements. So be sure to give yourself plenty of planning time. Be aware that cake makers who are in high demand can be booked out during the high season, so don't leave your booking too late if marrying at this time. Three to six months is enough time to plan the cake.

4.

Choose the Theme/Style of the cake

Get creative with the design.  The age of the cookie-cutter tiered white wedding cake with a plastic figurine at the top is long gone. Be inspired. When it comes to the style of your cake, take inspiration from your colour scheme, venue and even details on your wedding dress. Themed weddings need a themed cake.  Novelty wedding cakes-Think twice about ordering a novelty wedding cake. I know they can be fun and quirky, but remember, you will have to look at those pictures for the rest of your life.  If you really want to incorporate a Novelty cake consider getting a Groom’s Cake where it can be incorporated. Groom’s cakes are high fashion. When meeting your cake decorator for the first time, bring as much information as possible; theme of the wedding, colour of your dress, bridesmaid dress and inspiration from the room and flowers. It will make the selection easier.

6.

Flavour of the cake

It doesn't have to be a traditional fruit or sponge cake. Be inspired; go for chocolate, lemon or carrot cake and mix the layers. Your baker/decorator would have a list of flavours available.  Arrange for a cake tasting.  Don't assume — taste! Remember it must taste as good as it looks.

3.

Decide on your baker/cake decorator

Cake designers have styles too! Make sure that you are comfortable with and like the cake designer’s style.  Look at their website and photo’s.  Making your own wedding cake? Good for you but remember the magic word is practice, practice, and practice even more to avoid any stress and disappointment. And make sure you would be able to fit it in your time schedule.  Family or friend offers? Before accepting an offer from a friend or family member to make your wedding cake, ask to see their work and taste the cakes. Be honest with them, without offending them, instead of feeling sorry on your big day.

9.

Displaying your wedding cake

Too often forgotten, you must make sure you display and light your wedding cake where your guests can see it in its full glory. Apart from the bride’s dress this is the focal point at your reception, give thought to the cake’s ‘make-up’.'m another title

7.

Serving your wedding cake as a dessert

Why not save money and let your guests enjoy your delicious cake by serving it as a dessert, instead of waiting till late in the evening. Or even better~ opt for a cupcake tiered cake?

5.

Portions dictate size

It’s not the other way around, the number of people you need to serve is more important than the number of tiers you think your cake should have. If your number is on the low side you can make it up with dummy tiers, but bear in mind that they aren’t free. Remember the size of the cake also influence the prize of the cake.

10.

Keeping the top tier of your wedding cake

If you're planning to keep your top tier of your wedding cake for a christening or anniversary, make sure it's a fruit cake inside. The best way to keep it is to freeze it. Your cake decorator should be able to re-ice it for you for the new occasion.

8.

Delivery and setting up of the wedding cake

Before confirming your order, find out who will deliver your cake on the day and more importantly who will set it up. Too many brides forget about this.
