Why 'Snowberry's"?

This is a long story but it all started in 1998 when hubby and I went to a live performance of Helmut Lotti in Pretoria,RSA.

Helmot Lotti sang the Russian folk song "Kalinka"....and we fell in love with it!

"Kalinka" (Russian: Калинка) is a Russian song written in 1860 by the composer and folklorist Ivan Larionov.

The refrain of the song refers to the Kalinka, which is the snowball tree (Viburnum opulus). It has a speedy tempo , light-hearted and cheerful lyrics.

That night we decided that if we should ever have a daughter her name would be "Kalinka"....our Snowberry...

Kalinka was born on Saturday, 8 May 2004.

On Friday, 14 May we rushed her to NICU.

Our 'Snowberry' had brain damage after a bad case of jaundice. And she was left with Kernicterus and Cerebral Palsy, but...this isn't the end of her story...

Kalinka is just like the high tempo of the refrain...and this song fits her...

She IS Kalinka.

Due to her disabilities she can't speak nor walk, but she can love, smile and gave us so much sunshine in our lives thusfar!

In September 2012 I've decided I have to start doing something for an extra income in order to save up to buy her much needed medical products and supplies to make her life easier... she grew up so fast and with that her needs increased. We needed a new custom wheelchair, she had to get operations to fix her teeth ect...

I started baking cupcakes...doing something I love for someone I love with all my heart... and she loves cupcakes! So it was fitting!

And so "Snowberry's" was born.... and my hobby became my home business.  A year later and I do at least 2 cakes per week and hundreds of cupcakes per month!   Two years down the line I resigned my day-job to bake fulltime...

Here are the song's lyrics (translated from Russian) and a link to listen to this awesome song.

Kalinka

Little snowberry, snowberry, snowberry of mine!

Little raspberry in the garden, my little raspberry!

Ah, under the pine, the green one,

Lay me down to sleep,

Rock-a-bye, baby, rock-a-bye, baby,

Lay me down to sleep.

Little snowberry, snowberry, snowberry of mine!

Little raspberry in the garden, my little raspberry!

Ah, little pine, little green one,

Don't rustle above me,

Rock-a-bye, baby, rock-a-bye, baby,

Don't rustle above me.

Little snowberry, snowberry, snowberry of mine!

Little raspberry in the garden, my little raspberry!

Ah, you beauty, pretty maiden,

Take a fancy to me,

Rock-a-bye, baby, rock-a-bye, baby,

Take a fancy to me.

Little snowberry, snowberry, snowberry of mine!

Little raspberry in the garden, my little raspberry!
